The Wi-Fi 8 marketing wave hit hard this year. Vendors keep announcing chipsets and access points for a standard that will not ratify until 2028. For Canadian IT teams, that noise raises a fair question. However, the answer needs facts, not hype. First, it helps to separate what actually shipped from what is still a promise.

The silicon race is now a hardware race

Broadcom opened this race in late 2025 with a trio of enterprise access point chips. Subsequently, MediaTek followed at CES 2026 with its Filogic 8000 family. Meanwhile, Qualcomm and other vendors reached the sampling stage. Notably, this year the story moved past silicon. For example, TP-Link unveiled a full Wi-Fi 8 lineup at IFA 2026, with regional pre-orders opening on September 30. In addition, its Omada enterprise brand launched a Fusion Gateway series aimed at installers and managed service providers. As a result, Wi-Fi 8 is no longer a slide deck. It is now product on a shelf.

Reliability, not raw speed

Here is the part that matters. Wi-Fi 8 does not chase a bigger headline number. Instead, the design goal is reliability. Specifically, the standard targets lower latency and steadier throughput at the cell edge. It also aims to behave better in dense, crowded rooms. MediaTek framed its chips around ultra reliable connectivity for AI driven applications. In practice, that focus fits enterprise reality better than another peak speed claim. Most networks do not fail because the top speed is too low. Instead, they fail because coverage, roaming, and airtime were never engineered properly.

What this means for your next refresh

So what should a Canadian IT director do with this news? First, do not buy pre standard Wi-Fi 8 hardware for a production network. The 802.11bn standard remains years from ratification. Early silicon also carries real interoperability risk. Second, keep buying Wi-Fi 7 where you have a real need today. Wi-Fi 7 is certified, shipping in volume, and well understood. Furthermore, most client devices in your fleet cannot use Wi-Fi 8 features yet. Therefore the access point is only half the equation. Until your laptops, scanners, and phones catch up, a new radio standard delivers little.

The fundamentals do not change

The standard on the box does not change the fundamentals. A survey still tells you where to place radios. Similarly, interference still steals airtime. Client capability still decides what you actually get. In short, Wi-Fi 8 will not fix a network built on a floor plan and a guess. Ultimately, the vendors will keep shipping. Your job is to buy for the problem in front of you, not the logo in a press release.
